In the above picture you can see a small bed room with a portable air condition installed by the window. Also the part of a pop up canopy covering a twin bed.

In the left picture you can see this canopy in the small roon from another angle. This canopy will save a lot of energy of cooling by confining the air flow mostly under the canopy which is about one third of the size of the room. It makes the comfort zone much easier to maintain.

For instance, in the worst time of a recent heat wave. The roof temperature is 121 F, The top of the canopy is 98 F, The top of the bed is 95F, the floor is 93 F.

The portable LG air conditioner is only 8,000 BTU. Without the canopy, it is useless in this heat wave.

If you have a large house with many large rooms, the central air condition is too much a waste in most occasion. It is easy to make a few comfortable zones in your house to save energy.

The window air condition unit is not as effective because you can not bring it under the canopy. 

The portable air conditioner is easier to install. The crux is in the installation of the exhaust hose. You must put the exhaust outside the window and you do not want outside air leaked into the room. The LG air condition unit provides a  installation kit that includes a slide-together window bracket which fits most windows.

Even if it does not fit exactly to your windows, you can use it as a base to make a good exhaust hose support if you are somewhat handy.
